Blueberries Mississippi And The Most Popular Varieties

By Stephanie Price

There are two basic types of blueberries, with several popular varieties each, which grow in Mississipi, particularly in the Southeast area. Those two types are called Rabbiteye and Southern Highbrush. Delicious and tasty, Blueberries Mississippi are widely known for their high quality and they are harvested, depending on each particular variety, from early May till September.

As it was said, the type Rabbiteye is native to Southeast area. Thanks to the fact that it requires so called cross pollination, it is important to grow at least two varieties in close proximity. They might have similar characteristics, or desired ones can be combined. Brightwell, Tifblue, Centurion or Premier are some of highly appreciated varieties.

Tifblue harvesting season begins June 20, and these lovely, large and nicely blue berries can be harvested using machines, usually for freezing, or for consummation, freshly picked by hand. This variety requires 550 to 650 chill hours. Powderblee is interesting because it cracks less in wet weather, and requires 550 to six hundred chill hours. Harvesting is mid to late May. It has vigorous plant growth and good flavor.

Centurion has a rather rare quality when it comes to blueberries, its flowers are self-fertile. The berries are medium sized, have a nice blue color and are harvested usually late in July. But, the harvesting season goes on till September. This sort can be harvested mechanically for both fresh consumed berries and those that will be frozen, but this can be applied for most varieties as well.

Brightwell, with its mid blue berries, very small scars and really appealing flavor, has another great characteristic, it produces great volume of these lovely fruit. In Southeast area the harvesting season will start June 1. This sort needs up to four hundred chill hours. Another interesting variety is Premier, with its vigorous plant growth, large berries and high productivity.

Southern Highbush type is usually ripened during May. The earliest varieties are Reveille and O'Neal, which come early in May, while others usually come mid May. There are many popular varieties in this particular blueberry type, such as Gulf Coast, Bladen, Jubilee or Georgia Gem. Medium blue O'Neal has very large berries and requires four hundred chill hours. Early harvesting makes it really widely appreciated, as well as its lovely flavor.

Among other popular sorts of Southern Highbush type some are popular thanks to their very light blue berries, for example Reveille and Cape Fear. Jubilee is commercially extremely good, because it can be almost completely harvested in only one to two picking. Some sorts are designed for yard planting and hand picking, while others are more acceptable for commercial planting and mechanical harvesting. Reveille is highly appreciated for its ability to hold up in storage, among other things.

Blueberries have so many great characteristics and high nutritional value. Everyone has their favorites, depending on their size, taste or some other qualities. Some special characteristics are always appreciated, such as small, dry scars, appealing color or large berries. Market price is highest in the beginning of harvesting season, and that's why those earliest varieties are especially popular.
