All About A Vegan Granola

By Janet Thomas

To be a vegan is sometimes simpler than regular meat eaters as they refrain from eating meat and other animal based products. There exists a philosophy behind it too and eating Vegan granola is no different. It is a much sort after meal and has been enjoyed by strict vegetarians and meat eaters alike over the decades.

It is a great filler upper no matter which rules or philosophies you follow. However, with strict vegetarians, no dairy products are used in its consumption such as milk or yogurt. Never mind that it is a hearty and crunchy munchy meal enjoyed by all.

Vegans take using animal products a step further. They refrain from the use of any animal product and even believe that it is not a sustainable product. Some do not use even any kinds of animal products such as leather used for shoes, belts and other clothing accessories.

It is a great and tasty meal among strict vegetarians as it offers so much roughage and protein as it is made with nuts such as almonds and others. Fruit is added too and this can be dried fruit or fresh fruit. Some even add fruit juices to be used instead of milk a common dairy product which is avoided.

If not bought from a supermarket, it is simple to make in the home kitchen. All that is required are the ingredients and an oven to bake with. The basic formulation is made with rolled oats, bran and other nuts like almonds and even sesame seeds. Using honey or maple syrup as an additive, simply stir the mixture together and bake until a crunchy consistency is obtained.

Varying quantities of dried fruit are used depending on preference and these include dried peaches and raisins. Add all the ingredients together in a bowl and have them chopped up with a mixer. If no mixer then it is simply done by hand. Add honey or maple syrup or any sugar based product such as sucrose to give it that sweeter taste.

As vegans do not use dairy milk and dairy yogurts which regular meat eaters will use, they prefer to use soya milk and others such as almond, coconut and rice milks. Fresh fruit can be added too either before mixing or added after. Again, it is preferable to use an electric chopper rather than by hand as by hand it can take some time.

Vegans watch what they eat and abide by not eating animal products adherently. Some often confuse it with muesli which is very similar but not the same. The difference is is that muesli is not baked until crunchy but still does have common ingredients. All in all, this remains a great snack and its popularity speaks for itself. It's history dates back many years and the name was coined back in eighteen sixty three by a man named James Caleb Jackson. He worked in a sanitarium on a hillside looking over Dansville, New York. From these humble beginnings, granola's popularity is now grown to worldwide proportions and is a favourite meal enjoyed by all.
